An important monument and staple within Custer County is the Crazy Horse Memorial. This monument currently stands as the largest mountain carving in the world and is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This outstanding monument was originally sculpted in 1948 by Korzak Ziolkowski and depicts the Oglala Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse, on a horse and pointing into the South Dakota distance.
As a seasonal hotel near Crazy Horse Memorial, Comfort Inn & Suites is only 7 short miles away! And this is why we strongly encourage guests to visit this rather popular attraction. Not only is Crazy Horse a beautiful monument to see, but also the history and message that stands behind it is rather awe-inspiring. A definite must-see and experience for everyone looking to visit South Dakota.
To dive deep into the roots of South Dakota is to understand the foundation of a people that originally settled on the lands of Custer and its surrounding counties. As history has repeatedly shown the submergence of minorities, a great deal of original culture and traditions of the North American Indians has been lost over the centuries in South Dakota.
This is why a Lakota Chief, Henry Standing Bear, introduced the idea of commissioning a monument of the Lakota leader, Crazy Horse, to be carved out Thunderhead Mountain in the remaining granite of his Paha Sapa, which is said to be sacred land by some Oglala Lakota, between Custer and Hill City.
With this, South Dakota residents and its visitors can be reminded or introduced to the legendary leader of the North American Indians. A leader that represents a Native American war leader and hero of the Oglala Lakota who lived a life protecting the land, culture, and traditions of the Lakota people.
This stunning and artistic monument has continued to be under construction since its original first carving into stone by Korzak Ziolkowski in 1948. The master plan of the memorial in its finality will include the mountain carving monument, a Native American Cultural Center, and an Indian Museum of North America. It is also currently envisioned to act as a center point for a satellite campus of the University of South Dakota.
